Another product from Out of the Box that
I picked up is Apples to Apples which is more of a party
game for multiple players. The basic setup is still
quite easy and simple to learn. There are two decks
of cards, one of which lists adjectives or categories
and the other lists items that might fit the category.
Gameplay is lead by the "judge" which alternates
from player to player each round. The judge draws a
green category card and lays it face up on the table.
All the other players then pick one item from their
hand that best fits this category and piles it face
down near the category. The judge then reviews the cards
submitted and picks the best, or most humorous match
to declare a winner for the round.
I make this sound a little droll, but
trust Uncle Grimwell, there's more
to it than a game of Jeopardy. The word combinations
are intentionally funny and misleading; and this is
a winner when you have a small party of friends over
and are looking for something different. (MSRP
19.95)
There is also a "junior" version of this
game for younger children and it works on the same principle
with simpler words and concepts. My son gets a kick
out of making wierd combinations that work, but are
not what you would initially think of as a match. (MSRP
16.95)
Out of the Box has a number of other games,
and their website lists a number of awards from groups
as diverse as MENSA and Origins. These are the ones
I am familiar with and can suggest as good buys that
are well worth the money. When I go to Gen Con this
August, I'll see about what other games they feature.
