“Apples to Apples” is
one of our favorite games to play when we have
company over. Our only complaint (before now) is that some
of the cards contained words or references to people,
places, or things that the children were not familiar
with – even the older ones. Enter this game...
Apple to Apples Jr.... and the problem is solved. The
concept of Apples to Apples is simple: Each round,
all players except the judge are dealt five red cards,
each with a different person, place, or thing (Ex: “a
volcano,” “Superman,” or “water
parks”). The judge then draws a green card, which
contains a description or category (Ex: “amazing” or “gigantic”).
Then each player chooses a red card they think best
fits the category or that the judge will be likely
to pick (more on this later) and plays it face down
in the middle of the table. Once everyone has played,
the judge mixes the cards up and reveals them one at
a time. The judge then chooses the “best” red
card. The player who played it receives the green card.
The first player to get four green cards is the winner.
After each hand of five cards is played, the judge
duties are passed to the next player. The fun of this
game comes in the comparisons. Sometimes it’s
a result of a player making a joke, and other times
it’s a result of the fact that you’re down
to one card in your hand, and you don’t have
a choice. It pays to know your judge well. If your
judge has a dry sense of humor, then “pond scum” might
be the perfect red card to play when the category is “amazing”.
If the judge has no sense of humor, then “Superman” would
be a better answer. Regardless, the game is always
good for lots of laughs. As is the norm for Out of
The Box Games, the production quality is high. The
box is sturdy and colorful, and the cards are nice
as well. The box contains a tray to organize the cards
both during game play and storage. The second edition “Junior” version
is newly expanded with 288 more cards than the first
edition, so it’s better than ever. “Apples
to Apples” is one of the few games in our home
to get the “I love this game” rating from
all of our children, and they are even more thrilled
with the Junior edition. Trust me on this one... if
you have a large family or if you want a game you can
play with a group, you’ll love the Apples to
Apples games.
