Concepts, Skills, and Learning Strategies:
- Vocabulary development

Activity Idea 1
Start with a single card that either has
a single letter or a combo of letters. Have the class generate
words that start with these letters. These words can then
be used as a word wall for your classroom.
Activity Idea 2
Use a single card to help teach the beginnings
or ends of words. The students will learn what sounds consonants
and vowels make in different words.
Activity Idea 3
Start with all of the cards placed face down
and mixed up in a pile. Draw one card at a time. The students
then have two minutes to write as many words as they can
think of that contain what is on the card.
Activity Idea 4
Have the students split into two lines. (Teams)
The students first in the line “face-off.” Pick
a card from random. Whichever student is able to come up
with a word first that has that specific letter(s) at the
beginning of the word then they earn a point for his/her
team. Play until one of the teams has 15 points.
Activity Idea 5
Split the students into groups of 3-5. Give
each student a card. The group then combines all of their
cards together to form different words. From these words
they will create a story. Each group will write the story
down. They will then share it with the class to see who has
the most unique story.
Activity Idea 6
Players divide into two teams. Each team is
given the same letter card. Seven letter cards are dealt
between each team. In silence, each team comes up with as
many words as they can in three minutes. When the round is
done, seven new cards are dealt and play continues. The team
with the most words wins. Variation: This game can also be
played as charades. Each team acts out their words to the
other team. |
